It can be traced back to Febrés 'chuychuywe' and Valdivia 'suysuywe' which ultimately goes gack to Quechua 'suysuna' followed by the mapuche instrumental 'we'. It is possible that the borrowing is through Spanish. Most forms in present dialects are based on 'cernir' (cf. Augusta 'chüñidwe'). see Hernández et al give the form chünüwe.
