RBA suggests 'kum+pilun'. Compare 'kumkewün' or 'cunquehuén' as the name for a different kind of mollusc (machas – Mesodesma donacium), still used in Chiloé. Here the 'kum' element probably means 'red' and the 'kewün' element means 'tongue', which is accurate in reference to these molluscs. The 'red' meaning is less apt for oysters.
